The gurl wanted a new computer for Xmas.  Ask and she shall receive!  Isn't this sorta like asking a drunk for a drink...?

This time newegg.com came through for me at quite a better price.  I got every single component through them in fact, which is also pretty odd for me.  Usually I'm hunting and pecking all over to get the absolute best deal.  However, I had a hard time beating the newegg.com prices elsewhere.  Pretty cheap second day shipping also.

So now we get to play BF2 together.  Awww how cute....!!!

Hey wait a minute, since when does SHE get the better computer!?!?! ;)~

So I finally got approval from my "financial administrator" to get the new computer I've been wanting for some time now.  I went heavy on the power on this one.  Normally I find the low price breaks at pricewatch and go from there.  Well I tried to avoid bleeding edge prices but I'm definitely still at cutting edge prices.  Very out of the norm for me.

Also, I think that mwave.com has comparable prices to newegg.com but I think mwave has more selection.  At least for my choices I found every item I wanted at mwave for competitive prices I had a hard time finding cheaper elsewhere, and if it was cheaper elsewhere it was only by a buck or two.

So here's what my new computer will be on Wednesday...

Jul 8, 2005 - Browsers3 Comments

Recently, I've seen a lot more marketing for the Firefox browser.  More and more friends have mentioned they use it now also.  So my curiosity has peaked a bit.  However, most articles I find online start off by bashing IE so hard, I find it difficult to get past the first paragraph of review seeing how biased the "journalist" is right off the bat.

When I do get into an article, frequently it's filled with raving about the tabbed browsing ability of Firefox (ability to see multiple web pages within the same Firefox window using tabs to navigate them) and how much "more secure" Firefox is than IE which is apparently a festering open wound of bad security holes if I believe what they tell me in those articles.

Now, the tabbed browsing I could care less about.  There is this thing called a taskbar in your Windows OS at the bottom (by default) of your screen.  You can open more than one window of IE and browse to multiple websites.  I frequently use Ctl+N to open a new IE window right where I am already to follow a different path of links or even right click on a link and choose "Open in New Window".  Very easy, very simple and very useful.  I almost get annoyed with tabbed browsing as it reminds me of Lotus Notes and how it manages it's interface with tabs.  Just seems so unintuitive to me.  I find myself perusing my taskbar looking for that window for my new e-mail I just was at and after about 15 seconds I finally realize it's in Notes, in a tab at the top of my screen. &n?sp;Arg.

So this only really leaves the security issue.  I found an article relating to this today that was written about two months ago.  Based on market research by Symantec, it points out that while IE might have the overall security concern focus, Firefox has it's fair share of vulnerabilities.  "Security through obscurity" is a phrase it uses to describe why Firefox has in the past seemingly held a better status as far as security goes.  As more people use the browser, the more vulnerabilities get found and the more chance malicious people will attempt to attack it.

For now, I'm staying with IE.  I've used it for 9+ years now and am comfortable with it.  I find it intuitive.  I like Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

What I find most interesting about all this talk about Firefox/browsers in general recently is that this all highlights my thoughts that marketing has somehow convinced people to consider browsers like they seemingly do about cell phones;  How yours looks defines you.  I'm afraid I don't employ this method of thinking.  A browser is a browser is a browser.  IE is not necessarily better than the others, but it's not necessarily worse either.

Move along, nothing to see.
